The formation of SADC was originally influenced by the need to promote and support political liberation in southern Africa. With the fall of apartheid and the attainment of political independence in the region, SADC was transformed to become a vehicle for socio-economic and political development. Through SADC, the region has embarked on complex processes of pursuing sustainable economic and social development while at the same time making efforts to consolidate the emerging democracies and good governance in line with the SADC Treaty. The SADC secretariat in collaboration with the Member States has made great progress in this regard. However, it is evident that the achievement of SADC development goals requires incorporation and contribution of civil society formations, including NGOs.
